Dr. Lobsang Sangay in the European Parliament

On the 23rd and 24th of January 2018 the EP was honoured by a visit of the President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dr. Lobsang Sangay.

During the first day of his stay, he met several MEPs under the leadership of Thomas Mann (EPP, Germany).

The second day, he joined a conference conducted by Molly Scott Cato (Greens, United Kingdom) and Csaba Sógor (EPP, Romania). He urged the EU to support the “Middle Way Approach”, the idea of an autonomous region of Tibet within the Chinese borders. Tibet shares the EUs values concerning human rights, democracy and liberalism. Mr Sangay called the EU the “mother” of the MWA, as His Holiness the Dalai Lama proposed the concept in Strasbourg, in 1988.

The Sikyong further elaborated on Tibet’s relevance in the field of security matters. It is the only region where China and India share a common border. In summer 2017 Asia experienced a direct and 72 days long face-off between the two powers with more than 100.000 tropes on each side.

The discussion with the parliamentarians also covered Tibet’s great significance in the fields of culture and environment. Dr. Lobsang Sangay pointed out that all of Asia’s most important rivers spring from Tibet.

Tibetan MPs in the EP

Members of the Tibetan parliament in exile from Dharamsala visit us in Brussels. The leader, Dolma Tsering, who is an institution among human rights activists, describes the unbearable situation of Tibetans in their homeland. She expresses her thanks for the worldwide support from parliamentarians, especially from Europe.

Here in the EP, respect for Tibetan identity, the middle way approach of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the guarantee of humanity are on our agenda. They are regularly the subject of official talks with Chinese authorities. We will continue to address the precarious situation of Tibetans during our debates, resolutions and our conferences with the civil society.

Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Gallery

On the occasion of the upcoming birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, members of the European Parliament, the Commission, the Council as well as Tibet Support Groups and NGOs came together in Brussels. During an impressive ceremony with Tibetan songs, Tashi Phuntsok, the Representative of His Holiness, appreciated the support for the Tibetan way.

As representative of the European Parliament, I gave an overview over our work with resolutions, initiatives and monthly meetings. Last year in September 250 participants from more than 50 countries attended a Conference in Brussels. We organized a Conference on the reincarnation of His Holiness as well as a Conference on Chinese Counter Terrorism-Policy in the European Parliament.

Tibet is and will remain on our political agenda: Freedom of religion, language, culture and Tibetan identity – without human rights violations.
